planning for the

future

Part III in our Renovate or Refresh Series

So, now that you have made plans based on your current needs, let’s check in to see if you might need to plan for the future. Ask yourself some of these questions…

How long do you expect to live in this home?

If you anticipate moving in 5-10-15 years your needs should reflect that time period. As well as the budget that is allocated should be directly related to how long you will be enjoying the renovation. A costly renovation, even if it isn’t going to gain you immediate property value increase, is worth it if you are going to enjoy it for over 10 years time.

Is the size of your family, and the people living in the home, going to change in the next 5 years?

Are you a young couple that is hoping to grow your family? Are you getting close to being empty nesters? This should affect your renovation plans.

Over the next five years will you have:

  • Babies or toddlers?

  • Mobility issues?

  • Difficulties using stairs?

  • A reduction in sight or hearing?

These types of questions can sometimes be hard to answer, but they are worth considering, so that all future possibilities have been explored.

Over the next five years will you be converting any spaces from their current use?

ie: converting a dependant’s bedroom who has gone away to college into a craft room or home office space

All of these questions seem pretty straight forward, but they are so important to explore if you are considering spending a considerable amount on a home renovation. Planning usually pays off, in the end, so good luck with the renos.
